    For each pixel, raster values represent the average Emergence date estimated for corresponding 2x2 km area, expressed as DOY (Day of the Year). NoData value is set to -1..This dataset was created in the framework of ERMES (an Earth obseRvation Model based ricE information Service), which is a FP7 Project co-funded by the European Commission with the objective of developing a prototype of downstream service dedicated to the rice sector to support authorities and farmers.

  • Data Quality: The map was generated starting from MODIS 250m 16-days composite imagery (Products MOD13Q1 amnd MYD13Q1). Data were downloaded form NASA distribution archives and preprocessed using the MODIStsp package ( Sowing Dates were then estimated using the PHENORICE algorithm, developed by CNR-IREA. Dates are estimated using a rule-based method, based on the analysis of EVI and NDFI (Normalized Difference Flood Index) time series. These are used both to identify the rice-cultivated areas (through identification of an unambiguous "crop" signal, associated with an agronomical flooding in the sowing period), and to estimate the dates of occurrence of some of the main phenological stages. In particular, Sowing dates are estimated as the date corresponding to an EVI minima located before a fast increase in EVI and in correspondance with an agronomical flooding. Emergence dates are estimated as the dates when the EVI signal increases above 10% of the range between the value at the sowing date and that of the maximum of the curve. Heading dates are estimated as the dates corresponding to the maximum of the curve ( The 250m spatial resolution maps were then aggregated on the ERMES 2x2 km grid, by averaging dates estimated for MODIS pixels contained in each 2x2 km cell.
